Sport in Clara NS
Our school has a huge tradition of promoting our national games of hurling, football and camogie. The current staff are fully supportive of that tradition and culture ensuring that the future of Gaelic Games in Clara N.S. is secure.
Participation in Gaelic Games is optional with pupils from Senior Infants to 6th catered for from September to June. Junior Infants are coached from Easter to June, though enthusiastic juniors sometimes enter the fray at an earlier juncture!
Hurling and Camogie
The last 20 years have seen unprecedented success for the school’s hurling and camogie teams in the Cumann na mBunscol competitions.
The run of success began with a great Roinn C victory in 2000.
Roinn A hurling titles were claimed in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2009 while the school were beaten Roinn A finalists in 2018 and 2019.
Corn de Bhaldraithe hurling titles were won in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005,2006 and 2008. This competition is for all country schools in the county.
Roinn B hurling titles were won in 1970 and two Roinn D titles in 1986 and 1992.
Camogie Roinn A titles were won in 1994, 2005 2006, 2008. Roinn B titles were won in 2001 and 2016 with our first school camogie title being the Roinn C championship of 1989.
The boys and girls achieved a magnificent treble in 2006 of Roinn A hurling, Roinn A camogie and Corn de Bhaldraithe hurling.
Many Mini Sevens titles in hurling and camogie were also won during these times.
Boys Football
The school won the Boys Roinn B football titles in 1992, 2003 and 2017 while the Country Cup has been won once, in 2003. The Boys Mini Sevens title in Gaelic Football was achieved for the first time in 2018 and repeated in 2019.
Girls' Football
In Girls’ Football we were crowned Roinn C champions in 2014 and 2017 while the Roinn B title was won in 2019. The Girls Mini Sevens football title was claimed in 2016,
Handball
A number of our pupils have entered the Cumann na mBunscol handball competitions over the years. The U-11 A Doubles title was won in 2017.
Swimming
The school has access to ‘The Watershed’ swimming pool in Kilkenny. All children from 3 rd to 6 th take part in our aquatics programme. We go to the pool for two terms, usually first and third term.

2019 - Swimming Gala Relay Team
There are three qualified swimming coaches in the pool to teach the children, based on levels of proficiency. The school takes part in the annual Swimming Gala for Country Schools.
